To Kindle or Not to Kindle?

Having been a book fan most of my life I have resisted the Kindle - even as an author trying to sell Kindle books, I have stuck with the traditional book. I like the feel and the weight of a book, it's look and smell, plus the feeling of satisfaction as I make my way through it and can see how far I have travelled.

These are all factors that haveput me off buying a Kindle - however the Christmas fairy struck in the form of a Kindle! and now I have to be completely and utterly honest... I'm hooked! And I haven't met anyone who has one who isn't. I have actually read more since Christmas day than I have in months and I'm reading the classics's... they're free!

This is my precious (Gollum's my man) and I will take-down any member of my family who attempts to touch it.

So tell me what your Kindle thoughts are? Have you purchased one or received one - have you gone on a free book frenzy?

A Trip to the Games

This is a fanfiction chosen by The Thirteenth Series readers! It's not been as easy as the Dr Who, but I got there :) I hope you enjoy my take on a scene from the Hunger Games book, mixed with a little Val Saunders magic.

Contains - Hunger Games and Thirteenth Series *SPOILERS!!*

Merry Christmas to you all and a very Happy New Year.

A Trip to the Games!

His insistent pacing was getting under her skin. “You must not interfere; you will go and merely observe this event, in shimmer form when necessary, and return when requested. Do you understand?” The High Judge pointed a spindly green finger out from under his cloak.
He was speaking down to her yet again; that was the third time this week. Val was so sick of these people, “I understand,” she bowed her head. “Will Zac be allowed to accompany me?”
“No, you know your training means you must be alone. Go to the Games, do not interfere and bring us information on this ritual. Be aware that we’re only sending you because it’s on your home planet, Earth.”
She sighed. Her so called ‘training’ was driving her insane. Stupid time-consuming visits to planets that no-one was interested in, and no-one had visited in hundreds of years. She was sure they were doing this just to keep her busy and out of their hair. She hadn't been allowed to see Zac for weeks. “Whereabouts on Earth am I visiting?”

The Thirteenth Series by G L Twynham

So what's it all about?

A science fiction and fantasy book series aimed at the young adult market. There will be six books in the series and book #4 will be released Spring 2013.

Here we go: Book #1

Imagine starting at the end and finishing back at the beginning. This is the story of a teenage girl called Valerie Saunders who is about to be thrown through time and space. Being bestowed with abilities beyond her wildest nightmares, she discovers that she not only has to deal with turning eighteen, her first job and an unwanted tattoo, but also magical powers and intense urges to fall in love. She envisaged she would spend her life blending into the scenery, not blowing it up!

Val has a calling, but which side is dialling her number?

Here we go: Book #2

Blurb:

Take a coven of witches, one tattoo, a first edition bookshop, an evil love crazed psychopath and a prison. Mix that with an alien Father Christmas look-alike, two parents you never knew you had, betrayal, a dash of heartbreak and a Morris Traveller and you have a glimpse of Valerie Saunders' life yesterday, before bed!

Just wait till she wakes up...

Here we go: Book #3

Blurb:

Three civilisations are at war - a war that could lead to the end of Earth as we know it. The time has come to take sides. Valerie Saunders has been given a gift, a job and a hunter - now she has to decide what she wants, and who will guide her down the right path. There are the ones who can be trusted, the ones that must be obeyed, and the ones who can't be seen...

She also has the perilous task of choosing her wedding dress!

My round-about way of saying THANKS

As an outsider you may look at what I do and wonder if I'm mad? Well I guess you have to be a little crazy to do everything yourself. Write, publish, market, promote and make the brews.

So if there's so much to do, and so few hands to help, why do it?

I'm forty and I've had a million jobs in my life (slight exaggeration). I started washing pots in a pub called The Bewick Arms when I was 12. I've never been afraid to work - that's a fact, and through life I have just kept  on working.

That was until I read Harry Potter. Then something happened. I was a single mum at the time and I suddenly thought, 'If that J K Rowling woman can write a book so can I!' Which is a little like saying, 'I can drive a car - I'm Michael Schumacher!'

So over the next three years I wrote a book - my dream book about a British girl with Super powers. Then I hit a wall, no-one was interested. So with a little (elbow) nudge from my mum I decided to publish myself.

Now you can turn your nose up at Indie and Self-published authors, but let me tell you this, it's the hardest I have ever worked in my life. If you meet an Indie author who's been successful, behind that is endless hours of hard work.

So lets skip to the interesting part - three books later - three audio's - 15,000 children visited and endless interviews and events under my belt. Here I am still grafting away, so WHY?

Because of YOU! The girl that sent me a message saying how she loved the books. The woman who's read all three and can't wait for the next one to be out! The young man waiting in the line to have his book signed. YOU - you make it all worth while. There is nothing in this world I would rather do. You are The Thirteenth Series

Now not everyone loves the books - but that's OK  it keeps you grounded. Striving to make the next one better than the last - everything has it's place in this world. Never let criticism slow you down! Make it speed you up.

I guess what I'm trying to say is THANK YOU. Without you there would be no books, without you there would be no reason to write. The journey we are on is just the beginning, and I hope we will be together for a very long time to come.

Best and magical Wishes

What do winners look like?

This is the lovely Amy - winner of one of the two Boden t-shirts. Also a fan of The Thirteenth Series.

So much so we had a brew in Starbucks a few months back where she grilled me about the books - even had notes written!

Amy is one of the reason I feel so lucky to do what I do - meeting the readers is a privilege that I take very seriously.

Having met 15,000 children in the past three years - and with school booking way into 2013 it's a job that goes way above just the books - you're there to inspire a generation to read and write!

Where to start your adventure!
